Energy Transition—Change Never Happens in a Vacuum
8:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. ET

How do Boards prepare for change that is beyond their control but will nevertheless have an impact on the ability of the pension plan or benefit trust to serve its members' needs over the long term? How can board members ensure their organization is responding to change as it happens instead of being run over by it?

The biggest change that is coming quickly for boards, all over the world, is the transition away from fossil fuels and toward sustainable, environmentally friendly forms of energy. All operations—whether in the energy business; the land business; the food business; or any commercial, financial or public enterprise—will be impacted by this change. In their oversight role, Boards have to prepare for what is ahead.

Boards provide oversight and are key to understanding and mitigating risk. Better to explore how the energy transition might impact the Plan and its members and what should be done to prepare. This Summit will lead trustees through a dynamic conversation around what if’s? Exploring the possibilities together, trustees will develop a framework on how to lead through change, that will help prepare for dealing with this and other issues.

"There is a tendency to think of leadership in terms of hierarchy, with the board chair playing the strongest leadership role. It is certainly true that an effective board chair contributes enormously to the board's productivity. However, every board member has a leadership role to play. Fundamentally, leadership entails speaking up when you have a concern and contributing what you can to make the organization successful."
