POSITION DESCRIPTION

The Pension and Benefits Advisor is an out of scope position responsible for providing expert guidance on all pension and benefit matters across SEIU Healthcare’s member worksites, and staff pension and benefit plans. This role requires a strong understanding of multi-employer pension plans, defined benefit pension plans, health and welfare benefit programs and labour relations. Duties include researching, analyzing and providing insights on pension plan structures/design and health and welfare benefit programs. The role monitors all pension and benefit regulatory and legislative policy matters impacting SEIU members working throughout the health care industry.

This position is full-time working at our Office in Richmond Hill, Ontario.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Provide strategic direction, technical analysis and guidance on pension plan design and health and welfare benefit programs.
• Monitor and report on the activity of pension plans at the municipal, provincial and federal levels;
• Review and analyze actuarial valuations of pension plans and benefit trusts;
• Provide collective bargaining support to internal stakeholders surrounding pension plans and health and welfare benefit programs;
• Develop and facilitate information sessions and training programs for members, SEIU appointed trustees, staff and stakeholders;
• Assist with the drafting of public policy positions related to regulatory and/or legislative changes impacting members’ pension plans;
• Assist with Union campaign initiatives surrounding pension and benefit matters;
• Conduct research and report on industry trends;
• Recommend solutions on all pension and benefit matters.
• Other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION

Undergraduate or graduate degree in labour/industrial relations, economics, or accreditation in pension and benefits courses, or equivalent experience.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE

• Minimum of five (5) years’ experience in pension plan/health and welfare benefit administration, preferably in a labour union environment.
• Knowledge of relevant labour laws and collective bargaining.
• Knowledge of actuarial methods and assumptions
• Experience in pension plan and health and welfare benefit program design.
• Knowledge of regulatory and legislative policy surrounding pension plans, and health and welfare benefit plans.

REQUIRED SKILLS AND QUALIFICATION

• Technical expertise related to pension plan design, including investments and actuarial analysis.
• Working knowledge of related legislation & standards (ESA, OHRC, OLRA, WSIA, Pension and Benefits Act)
• Working knowledge of related regulatory bodies (FSRA, CRA, WSIB)
• Ability to interpret collective agreement language.
• Proficient with Microsoft Office.
• Excellent written, verbal and communication skills, with the ability to distil complex information for a variety of audiences.
• Strong interpersonal skills.
• Strong analytical and critical thinking skills.
• Self-motivated and able to work independently with minimal supervision.
• Time management skills.
• Building and maintaining relationships with all stakeholders.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS

o Maintain a valid driver’s license and car.
o Work evenings and weekends. Work hours will vary to meet the needs of the operation.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORKING CONDITIONS / ENVIRONMENT

• Repetitive tasks requiring sustained concentration in researching and responding to inquiries.
• Dealing with different personalities and members in challenging situations.
• Remain in the seated position for long periods of time.
• Using a computer for long periods of time.
• Lifting and moving supplies and materials up to 25lbs.
