Top Trends in Apprenticeship Programs: 2024 Survey Report (U.S. and Canada)

Registered apprenticeships have played an essential role in the development of a highly trained workforce in the U.S. and Canada. These structured training programs combine on-the-job training with extensive technical instruction in a highly skilled occupation. The 2024 edition of Top Trends in Apprenticeship Programs survey report reveals:

• Top challenges faced by programs and apprentices include child-care and elder-care issues, drug testing and fitness for work issues, injuries due to nature of work, and increased worker hours due to reduced hires
• Apprenticeship program recruitment and retention issues include low wages and benefit levels during apprenticeship training (23%), offers of more steady work in other industry sectors (22%), stigma associated with skilled trades work (22%), apprentice poaching (19%), and physical and hands-on nature of work (19%)
• Most common components of life skills initiatives include personal safety (84%), mathematics (84%), work and jobsite behavior (83%), CPR and AED training (79%) and sexual harassment training (77%)
• Types of program instruction models are traditional with apprentices concurrently receiving instruction and on-the-job training (91% U.S., 75% Canada), segmented with apprentices alternating between instruction and on-the-job training (12% U.S, 20% Canada), and front-loaded with apprentices completing instruction before on-the-job-training (17% U.S., 35% Canada).
